Office cleaning-Robots could solve office cleaning problems

Robots may provide the ideal solution to large-scale office cleaning, claim Spanish scientists.

The DustBot project has been supported by funds provided under the EU Information Society Technologies’ Thematic area of the Sixth Framework Programme.

Developers have succeeded in demonstrating that robots could eventually offer an efficient way of cleaning up towns and cities.

Scientists from Italy’s Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna have been working on the project since 2006.

At a recent presentation at Bilbao’s railway station, the researchers showcased their latest two devices – the DustCart and the DustClean. Each machine is capable of ‘sensing’ potential obstacles and moving around them.

Mercedes Ferros, director of the project, explained that the robots use a combination of infrared sensors, ultrasound and a laser scanner to navigate.

She added: “The perimeter of the robot is controlled and thus its trajectory corrected if necessary.”

Writing for Examiner.com, Craig Grella, recently stressed an annual office cleaning programme can help to ensure a good working environment for staff.
